Let the Games Begin with the 2023 New Mexico Games Opening Ceremony!

Albuquerque, NM (May 8, 2023) – Let the games begin! The 2023 New Mexico Games will officially kick off its 34th year with the torch lighting of the cauldron to signify the start of New Mexico’s largest sports festival. This year the New Mexico Games will be presented by long standing partner, City of Albuquerque Parks & Recreation.


Since 1989, the New Mexico Games has focused on bringing New Mexicans together in the spirit of competition. In 2023, the Games will boast over 14 sports that New Mexicans of all ages can participate in!


Kicking off the list of sports events begins with New Mexico’s “Most Iconic” Memorial Day Weekend Basketball tournament May 26-29, 2023 taking place at UNM Johnson Gym. Divisions include 3rd through high school, Seniors age 50+, Men’s Rec, along with Men’s and Women’s Open. This year will feature team prize money for the Men’s & Women’s Open divisions which includes $1,200 for first place, $500 for 2nd, and $300 for 3rd. The Games will run through November of 2023 with Bowling Finals and Archery slated for the month.


Opening ceremony for the New Mexico Games will feature special guest speaker two time 5A State Champion Basketball Coach from Volcano Vista Greg Brown who joins us to talk about the state of New Mexico’s athletics and our mission to inspire New Mexicans and grow participation.


The 2023 New Mexico Games will signal the beginning of competition for the year with the torch lighting of the cauldron by 2022 New Mexico Games Male Athlete of the Year, Track and Field athlete Winston Crandall.

Athlete medals for 2023 will also be revealed for the first time to the public.


New Mexicans that medal in select 2023 events will qualify for the 2024 State Games of America National competition in San Diego, California.


Opening ceremony will take place at Balloon Fiesta Park Event Center on Tuesday May 9th, 2023 beginning at 11 AM and all media as well as invited guests are welcome to attend. Lunch will be provided courtesy of Dion’s Pizza.
